Protection Bill for GLBT Workers Passed

The bill, the Employment Nondiscrimination Act, is the latest version of legislation that Democrats have pursued since 1974. “On this proud day of the 110th Congress, we will chart a new direction for civil rights,” said Representative Kathy Castor, a Florida Democrat and a gay rights advocate, in a speech before the vote. “On this proud day, the Congress will act to ensure that all Americans are granted equal rights in the work place.”

GOI: President George W. Bush (doesn't that sound like a porn star pseudonym? George W. Bush stars in, "Screw America" also starring Dick Cheney) had threatened to veto an earlier version of the bill.

Representative Doc Hastings of Washington said, “I do not think it is the place of the federal government to legislate how each and every place of business operates,” Mr. Hastings said.

GOI: O.k. then, put your money where your mouth is "Doc" and yank support for religious orientation too. Do that and watch the nashing of teeth begin amongst the biased and bigoted religious fundies. As usual they want everything for themselves and screw anyone else who even looks or acts different or "unusual" then they do. I'm sure Jesus would be proud.

I find it amusing and breath-takingly hypocritical that the religious right is completely against this bill yet their religious beliefs are already protected in the workplace. So even if you believe that homosexuality is a "choice" then you can not deny gays the same protection for their "choice" that people receive for their choice of religion!! I say that if gays can not receive the same protection for their orientation then the religious shouldn't have protections either.

If "God" doesn't make mistakes then why are we discriminating against those born with both male and female genitalia?!! How dare you question the All Powerful Omniscient "God of Gods!!!." What part of "All Men are Equal" do these idiots not understand??

“It would be impossible for employers to operate a business without having to worry about being accused of discriminating against someone based on their ‘perceived’ sexual orientation,” said Representative Ginny Brown-Waite, Republican of Florida, who raised two fingers on each hand to flash quotation marks over her head as she said “perceived.”

GOI: I wonder what Larry Craig has to say about all this? Hmm??

This "perceived" Representative, Ginny Brown-Waite is clueless. Yeah I'm sure businesses would collapse if we had to actually recognize people with a different sexual proclivity. All hell would break loose and before long it would be anarchy!!!!!!! We'd have gays running around the office, infecting non-gays and we'd have to watch them strip down and dance naked on the desks. These fundies should be for gay rights since isn't that the kind of behavior that will hasten the end times that they want so badly???

What's even worse is the lack of a hate crimes bill that includes the gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-gendered community. So basically it's fair game on the GBLT community as we are saying, go ahead and beat the shit out of them. I'd say to ask Matthew Shepard whether a hate crimes bill for homosexuals is needed but he's dead because of the very hate this bill would seek to outlaw and severely punish.

And here I thought Christians were supposed to hate the sin but not the sinner. Somehow I can not see Jesus beating someone of an alternative lifestyle within an inch of their life as well as firing them for their sexual orientation. Then again, I have actually read the New Testament, three times but maybe I missed something between "love thy neighbor" and "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." I guess I missed the Book of Fred Phelps section about, "God hates fags."

It is sad that our trans-gendered brothers and sisters were excluded from this bill but over-all the bill is a step in the right direction.

Thank you for pointing out the hypocrisy regarding the choice of religion being protected a protected status, while sexual orientation has not been.

I agree that this legislation is a step in the right direction-- and high time, too. That said, as the partner of a trans-woman, I am frustrated that once again, a group of people get the message that they don't really count, that they can be sacrificed for the sake of political expediency. Thanks for pointing out this deficiency in the legislation.

Solidarity!

Hi James, first thanks for your visit and comments at Politics Plus.

I'd like to give you a Christian perspective on this issue. The only people Jesus ever publicly condemned were the religious hypocrites who attempted to shove their own piety codes down everyone else's' throats. Unlike authentic Christians, the theocons of the religious right are no different from those Pharisees and Sadducees that Jesus condemned. Because Jesus was tolerant of all others, and met people at the point of their need, my Christian faith impels me to support equal rights for the GLBT community.

This bell was a step in the right direction, indeed. Hopefully it will be expanded to include all.

Yeah I've always thought that was a glaring hypocrisy. It's just so sad and all so unnecessary.

I too hope that our trans-gendered friends will be included as soon as possible. Goodness knows they deserve it.

T&A:

LMAO. I feel the same way man. If you leave, take me with you.

Brent:

Thanks for stopping by my friend and thanks for the support of the GLBT community.

Tomcat:

You're welcome. I dig your blog and will be back for sure.

Thanks for the different perspective. I agree with you that Jesus wouldn't act this way and that many Christians find such discrimination appalling and folks like yourself give me hope in Christianity. I hope that you all can wrestle your religion back from the radical fundamentalists.

I honestly believe that Jesus would have been a liberal.

Personally I wish we could live in a country where people have moved past the point of descrimination to where this would be a non issue. And I blame the religions for us never being able to get there.

You and me both. America is socially inept, immature and embarrassing when compared to Europe. I would have left a long time ago but for two reasons:

1). As of now I lack the funds

2). I want to stay and fight to bring this country back to its former glory where freedom rang and liberty meant something.

James, I agree. I'm getting to the point where I really don't like it here anymore. But as you say, money matters, and I hate to think of this country going backwards instead of forward. It's kind of like my neighborhood I live in, I have lived in the same house more than half my life, 29 years and it just keeps going down hill. I don't really want to move but sometimes I feel I should for safety's sake.
If being gay is a "choice", is being straight a "choice" also?

Good point on on the gay issue.
