Did Karl Rove Pressure Foley to Run for Re-Election in '06?

Yesterday, a source close to Foley explained to THE NEW REPUBLIC that in early 2006 the congressman had all but decided to retire from the House and set up shop on K Street. "Mark's a friend of mine," says this source. "He told me, 'I'm thinking about getting out of it and becoming a lobbyist.'"

But when Foley's friend saw the Congressman again this spring, something had changed. To the source's surprise, Foley told him he would indeed be standing for re-election. What happened? Karl Rove intervened.

According to the source, Foley said he was being pressured by "the White House and Rove gang," who insisted that Foley run. If he didn't, Foley was told, it might impact his lobbying career.

"He said, 'The White House made it very clear I have to run,'" explains Foley's friend, adding that Foley told him that the White House promised that if Foley served for two more years it would "enhance his success" as a lobbyist. "I said, 'I thought you wanted out of this?' And he said, 'I do, but they're scared of losing the House and the thought of two years of Congressional hearings, so I have two more years of duty.'"

GOI: Sounds like Terdblossom. They didn't want Foley near Bush but they wanted him to stay as a rubber stamp in Congress for Bush. They surely knew about his "secret" and so it looks to me like they black-mailed him (in addition to the lobbying threat) by saying they'd cover-up his dirtly lil' affairs if he played ball to keep them in power and thus out of investigations. Power is the only thing that they care about and it's obvious now (just look at the Foley cover-up) that they are willing to do anything to keep it. They know that they have a lot of dirty laundry that they want to keep in the dark and are thus deperate and desperate people do dangerous things.

Brilliant transmission. By Jove, I think you've nailed it. I love the picture of the Jolly Roger. He is pure evil.

James,
I love the way you've been covering the Foley scandal. This whole thing stinks to high heaven. Keep up the pressure, man.

Much as they have used fear to "control" a large part of the electorate, I've long thought that the Bushies must be controlling a large part of the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress in a similar fashion. That mean having as many people in power as possible who have secrets they fear being revealed (ie: corruption, homosexuality, etc.)

Thank-you kindly. Rove is the great manipulator. The Emperor from Star Wars i'm convinced.

PT:

Thanks man. This culture of corruption is crumbling like a house of cards. This Foley scandal is the cherry on top. They just don't know when to quit. There is nothing they're not willing to do in order to keep power. Their corruption knows no bounds.

Seenos:

Yep, they are masters of brain washing people. I think you're right that they have a lot of dirt on a lot of people and they are manipulating that.

Have any of you read the book by
John Dean "Worse than Watergate?"

It sure opened my eyes about all the lies and the secrecy of the Bushies administration.

I've read that Dean book. I want to read his "Conservatives without Conscience." John Dean is awesome.
