A lot has already been said about this but let me just say that I hope Card's exit is just the beginning.
However, It's not like Card fell on his sword to help change the direction of country is headed in but because Bush had drained him like the vampire he is for 5 and one half years.
And Bolton isn't the independent blood that the administration needs but rather yet another Bush loyalist sycophant. So basically we've just traded in one insider for another insider.
It's like the mafia. The Godfather doesn't go out and post a job opening on Monster.com but rather recrutes from inside "the family" to keep a tight control on things.
So this is not exactly a "shake up."

It's interesting since a year ago the speculation I heard was that Card was going to quit -- to become Treasury Secretary.
The point of having Snow hang on at Treasury, even now, I'll never know.
And the point of having Rove hang on a deputy chief of staff I'll never ever ever know.
BTW, the reports that Card was within six months of eclipsing Sherman Adams' record for time spent as a Chief of Staff is wrong. The record is certainly Thomas "Leo" McGarry's 7 years as COS in the Bartlet Administration, which in a short while will eclipsed by Josh Lyman's 8 years as COS of the Santos Administration.
I think you're right on, James, re the Godfather analogy. Bush's sole interest is control -- to keep outsiders from knowing what an unbelievable nightmare his administration is. AND to keep insiders inside so they can't write more tell-all books about what a complete nincompoop our president is.
Dude - I wouldn't ever count on change, going against the grain, or not associating with cronies when it comes to this administration. The card resignation is really insignicant, at least IMO.
What I can't wait for, is Card's book out in 8 months detailing how incredibly fucked up Bush and his cabinet are. A la Paul O'Neil.
Tom:
Yeah Snow needs to go too and Rove should have gone a long time ago.
However, since he is "Bush's brain" he'll never go while Bush is in office I don't think.

Yep, it's just shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic to use a tired cliche. And I would love to read a tell all book from Card too!!
