Good News from Iran?

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's Foreign Ministry on Sunday offered the United States a share in building a new nuclear power plant in an apparent effort to curb U.S. opposition to its atomic program.

"America can take part in international bidding for the construction of Iran's nuclear power plant if they observe the basic standards and quality," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said at a news conference.

GOI: Is this good news or just an empty olive branch?

If my opinion matters, this is a brilliant ploy by the Iranians. It is basically omplete political cover for their program.

By offering the US to build it, they have shifted all the pressure on the US, because, certainly if the US were to build it, the thing would be laced with bugs and monitoring equipment. So, that tells the world Iran has nothing to hide in its nuclear program.

But, at the same time, it's brilliant because, as the Bush admin has layed out such a hostile position on Iran's nuclear development, the US cannot politically make this move.

So, from the Iranian side, they get an international perception that their program is above board with no risk the US will actually take them up on it.

There are times that you have to separate the player from the game, and that's one hell of a game.

Mike: Yes, of course your opinion matters here. :) I think that you are spot on with your comment.

With this announcement Iran has put the U.S. in a difficult position while making themselves look good to the international community.
