Barbara Bush Speaks out from the Plantation

Grande mama Barbara Bush:

"Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston."

Then she added: "What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they (GOI: "They" Who are predominately black) all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality."

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

GOI: Let them eat cake, eh Mrs. Bush?

W surely is his mother's son, huh? I'm reminded of Al Franken's run-in with Barbara.

May I suggest that we give Barbara Bush a break?

For one thing, few of us would survive if our mothers' statements were each attributed to us.

But most important, based on what I saw on CNN, Barbara Bush's comment was benign, and not worthy of her beheading.

It seems that the evacuees in the Astrodome where she paid a visit in large number told her that they had nothing left and where thinking/hoping to begin their lives again in Texas or somewhere other than New Orleans.

Barbara Bush's statement was a reflection of what she was learning from the evacuees. After their treatment post-Karina in New Orleans, and now having next to nothing, it is understandable that people in the Astrodome were thinking about how to restart their lives.

Perhaps we should give Mrs. Bush a break, eh?

No. I won't give BB a break. She gave us GWB. And he is too much to bear.

Isabella,

I point out to you that a mother doesn't know the child she is about to give birth to.

AND that NOW Barbara Bush is pro-choice!

Tom: I don't know, those comments are pretty bad. I am, however, willing to give her a pass but she needs to watch her words more carefully and have more tact.

Why? Between not wanting to worry her "beautiful mind" about body bags coming back from Iraq, and intimating that the poor of NOLA never had it so good while holed up in a refugee camp, I don't think the jury is out on Mrs. Bush any longer. She's an elitist, callous, insensitive see you next Tuesday.

I don't give her a pass. Her son is a product of his environment.

"DO NOT BEHEAD BARBARA!"

I wave my banner, proudly.

You know, the more I re-read and think about BB's statements the less I am willing to give her a pass. She is an intelligent woman and knows what she is saying. I have to go with Paolo on this one when he says that she is "elitist, callous, insensitive." She should know better then to talk like that but apparently not. Apparently she believes the way she said it or she would not have said it. I don't know how you can take her words out of context.

James,

I think you read her statement assuming there is something untoward in it.

I think her focus was on the hospitality of Texas and what the evacuees told her. By 'scary' I think she means it in the casual sense -- that is that it is a little overwhelming.

I do not think she had any racist or classist inklings. She is just expressing some surprize in what she was learning from the evacuees in the Astrodome.

Well, you have your opinion and I have mine. I still think it sounds bad.
