O.k., this photo captures Bush's finest moment but after this photo things in the country under his watch have pretty much tanked.
Now, I am very critical of the man and I do not hate him but goddamn he has failed to respond very well with this hurricane disaster (which is now a humanitarian crisis).
The Bush World Trade Center speach was stirring and inspirational to all Americans. There he was standing on the rubble rallying everyone.
So where the FUCK is he now?!! I have to say his "pep talk" this afternoon was weak and very uninspiring. He should have gone down there immediately. He should be there still rolling up his sleeves and taking off his suit. Vowing to stay as long as he could.
At least vowing to stay as long as his damn vacation. He needs to be taking a boat out and visiting as many people as possible. Helping to rescue people. Seen filling sand bags, ANYTHING!!
I hear that he is going to be down there friday, FRIDAY!! What's SO important that he can't be down there NOW!! For Christ's sake he flew OVER the area today? Why didn't he land the plane, put on his "Commander-in-Chief" jacket and get out amongst the masses in need of some leadership.
THAT'S the kind of leader ship we need right now. Not some "phoned in" speach finding him sitting his ass comfortably in Washington D.C.
Goddamn it i'm pissed off with our "Commander-in-Chief" and this disaster has pushed me over the edge.
One of the main reasons why the Gulf Coast area was hit with such a monster of a hurricane is because of rising ocean temp's due to global warming and the Bush administration STILL says the science is "inconclusive." Well GODDAMN IT is the Hurricane Katrina aftermath enough science for you BUSH?!!!! We have fucked around too long with global warming and now nature is lowering the hammer on us.
Oh yeah and fill up your gas tanks now because the prices are being jacking up as I type and will go up higher this weekend.
Oh yeah, where is the Army, Navy and National Guard in the numbers we need to protect the levees from a terrorist attack?? Now would be the perfect time for terrorists to hit New Orleans.
Of course we all now that the numbers of these troops are pinned down in Iraq. Well, Dubya now our Gulf Port LOOKS like an Iraqi war zone!

I tend to want Pat Robertson and Pres. Bush to do whatever they are inspired/want to do.
If Bush is MIA with respect to Katrina, then it can be evidence that his compassion is MIA. It makes no difference, at this point, as to whether FEMA can or cannot do its job. Bush doesn't have much to do with running things at the ground level. He never was a details guy.
If Bush were to roll up his sleeves and go to New Orleans/Mobile/S. Miss., it would only be a photo op, a distraction, and an encumberance to folks who are REALLY trying to get in there and save lives.
I don't feel he is needed to do his "Big Daddy" routine. We've had a month of him dodging Cindy Sheehan to know that he is a lounge lizard.
I don't disagree with you one bit. The one service that was on the ball and is always on the ball was the Coast Guard, those guys are very, very, very good at what they do.
Geez if we did not have the Coast Guard it would have been Tuesday before some of the people where rescued.
James,
The NY Times Editorial Board editorial for 9/1 agrees with you very directly -- though not to the extent where they use the word Fuck. But they do very much share your point of view on this matter, harranging Bush very severely for his failure to engage.
In their piece "Waiting for a Leader," they write, "George W. Bush gave one of the worst speeches of his life yesterday ... And nothing about the president's demeanor yesterday - which seemed casual to the point of carelessness - suggested that he understood the depth of the current crisis.
"It would be some comfort to think that, as Mr. Bush cheerily announced, America 'will be a stronger place' for enduring this crisis. Complacency will no longer suffice, especially if experts are right in warning that global warming may increase the intensity of future hurricanes. But since this administration won't acknowledge that global warming exists, the chances of leadership seem minimal."

I agree with Tom.
My own personal experience on the morning of 9/11/2001, when I was in my downtown Manhattan apartment trying frantically to get in touch with my wife, while Bush was on Air Force One zigzagging the country, pretty much sealed the deal for me. When the chips are down, you can't rely on him to do the right thing... only for his people to take a few days and think about the best media op to stage for maximum benefit.
Any symbolic filling of sandbags would be a distraction and just nonsense. To show him in Crawford, or DC, detached and with that vacant expression on his face, says about all there is to say about the Bush Administration.
My friend Tony was just deployed to Louisiana...and when I say just, I mean that literally. Deployed, called up after the fact.
Bush will do nothing, and he will continue to descend. It is quite clear the people down there are PISSED, and there is quite a contrast between the effort he made during last year's hurricanes right before the election and now. He's a liar and a cheat, and now that he's been elected and can't be re-elected, he doesn't give a shit, and it's showing.
Thanks for the article!!
dave: yeah, the coast guard has been amazing. They have been such a great asset in this aftermath.
tom: yeah, I've just finally lost it all regarding bush. I hope I didn't offend you with all the strong language.
paolo: yeah, bush just doesn't get it does he?
jessica: I agree that he doesn't give a shit and it's showing. You're right that he does have to be re-elected so he does whatever he wants.
No, James. Not at all offended by the strong language. I was just sort of noting, tongue in cheek, that the NYTimes seemed as adamantine as you in frustration with Bush, but being a basically snooty newspaper, do not use the F-word.
