The Rove Defense

Well, the talking points are in as the RNC trys to save the sinking ships.

This from the L.A. Times:

The RNC talking points, distributed to Republicans on Capitol Hill and to party operatives across the country, provided a detailed point-by-point defense of Rove's role in the Plame case, saying he only discussed the situation with Cooper to prevent him from writing something inaccurate.

**GOI Comment: Oh, o.k. so now we are to believe that Rove discussed the identity of Valerie Plame in order to protect her from an inaccurate story?? Yeah, o.k. this is like the defense of the abusive father who embarrasses his kid in public by outing them as a bed wetter and then says that it is for their own good because it was done in the spirit of honesty.

**GOI Comment: The other defense they are using is that Rove simply said "Wilson's wife" rather then her specific name. RNC chairman Ken Mehlman had this to say:

"He did not, according to what we learned this past weekend, reveal the name of anybody."

GOI: Yeah, for all we know he could have been refering to some other Wilson. PA-LEEZE!!! There is only one Wilson in reference to the Niger story who's wife was a secret CIA operative.

RNC spokesman Brian Jones said the committee decided to issue the talking points after Democrats on Capitol Hill began attacking Rove, some calling for his resignation and others saying that his security clearance should be revoked.

"It's appropriate that we push back and take existing information and lay out what the reality is. Part of the reality is that Democrats are engaging in blatant political attacks," Jones said. "There was a need for it to be done, and we did it."

GOI: Blatant political attacks, huh? O.k., this last defense is worst of them all. The man broke the law and his defense is that the democrats are attacking him because he' s Republican rather then a crook?? "They just don't like me because I'm a Republican," I can hear Rove whine. Yeah, it has nothing to do with you leaking the name of a CIA operative who was working in the field of WMD and jeopardizing our national security. Does it? As radio talk show host Randi Rhodes said today, "democracts are engaged in political attacks because they are pointing out the blantant political attack of Karl Rove??" God, their spin is enough to make your head snap clean off.

Besides the President is the one who said he would fire any leaker that he found in his administration so I'm just holding the President to his word. Which isn't worth much these days. Bush and his buddies lie as effortlessly as the rest of us breath. So if these are partisan attacks then is the President now a democrat since he said that he would not put up with a leaker in his White House? Hmm. Yep, they're in a tight spot indeed.

Do not struggle. You will only sink in deeper.

Arrrrgh.

I have faith in what the Special Prosecuter is doing and what the Grand Jury is up to.

Often, when the media and web stir into grand action it is grandly helpful in keeping a story/issue from disappearing, but I think here many lawyers are sharkily doing their duty such that we can be fairly sure truth [what there is of it] will be uncovered soon.

I think we must wait for the final/best truth to be revealed, THEN, my liberal friends, DO NOT FORGET AND BE PREPARED TO SPRING INTO ACTION.

There will be many questions, then, about the integrity of the Bush Administration that must be asked. And, we should look at Bush's, Rove's and McClellen's words and see if they were direct lies and carefully parsed.

Also, at that later point, we must address the function of the press and look at what the hell was going on with Miller and Cooper protecting/aiding Rove with his skullduggery. Miller and Cooper seem to have, themselves, torpedoed the confidentiality rights of the press. But ... we shall see.

This is a fascinating issue with many facets!

This is getting very interesting. There is no doubt that Rove is the leak and there is no doubt that the White House is doing some form of a cover up.

I have to disagree with Tom here. Remember James when I was holding back on the Downing Street Memo saying that it was worth waiting before jumping on a foreign memo? Well, we've waited, now it's time to jump. We can't wait any longer. The longer we wait the more time we give the neocons to cover it up. We have to jump with both feet on this one.

I'm not letting up now.

Stay with it James. You're doing great.

Tom: Yeah, I am very interested in what the Grand Jury will find. I'll just say that I will not be surprised if Rove is indicted.

MJ: Thank-you.

The Grand Jury has a very high bar: They have to be convinced there is evidence that might prove that Rove KNOWINGLY outed Plame.

Still, I think this is likely.

What bothers me A LOT, watching tape of McClellen and Bush in 2003 on CNN, is that these guys seem to be parsing their words -- carefully avoiding the questions about Rove that are put to them such that they say something that is TECHNICALLY true.

In 2003, McClellen said [something like] "I didn't have to directly talk to Rove, it is just beyond credulity to suppose he was involved in the Plame matter."

And Bush, in 2003, says he WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT leakers and will fire anyone BREAKING THE LAW. With his deviously careful words, Bush is right to say he needn't fire Rove YET.
